“I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do.” ~Edward Everett Hale

For personal development one should strive to be the best you can be. Here are some thoughts on why helping others is good for personal development.

Personal Development – Why Helping Others Is The Best Way To Help Yourself By Gabriel J. Adams

In this day and age, when everyone seems to be fighting tooth and nail for everything, it is difficult enough to get what you want and need, let alone think about anyone else. However, it may surprise you to know that helping people is actually the easiest way to get what you want, and that it takes a lot less time and effort than one might imagine. The most difficult thing for people to understand is that when you help someone, you actually gain the most out of the experience, and that one should be grateful that they are in a position to be able to help others, rather than one in which they are in need of help.

If one can take a moment to think about the last statement. A Chinese proverb goes something like this: “A giver is more fortunate than a receiver”. It is perfectly logical, because someone who is able to give must be in surplus, while someone who is in need of help is lacking something. Therefore, not only is it a way of restoring balance in the world, often one tends to find that by giving out positive energy and channeling it into your actions, you will receive the same thing in return.

This is not to say that we should do something to feel good or to receive something else in return, but that when you associate your actions with positive attitudes (or think positive thoughts and act on them), you will nurture a positive mental state. For example, getting involved in volunteering work helps one to appreciate their own life much more by learning about the difficulties other people have to overcome. Helping someone with an assignment or homework develops your teaching skills, and also reinforces your own understanding and knowledge about something. Helping a friend with renovations might give you a hint or two about the best place to buy certain goods.

If you’ve ever helped someone, and realized what an enjoyable experience it was, then you’ll understand what I mean. If you feel like you’re always giving and not receiving, then it’s because you’re either expecting too much from helping people (which should not be your motivation) or that you’ve got pretty much everything you need (which you should be grateful for). The only thing you can’t get by helping people is selfishness, so if you’ve got too much of that, then you should start helping yourself get rid of some excess by helping others.

TODAY’S TIP: Recognize that the best way of getting what you want is to help others get what they want.

Have you noticed that it feels good to make others feel good?

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” ~Dr. Seuss

Today I present the thoughts of another on the subject of giving.

How You Can Feel Good Simply by Helping Others By Ronnie Nijmeh

It’s very easy to get caught up in our own to-do lists and never-ending activities, but one of the best things you can do is to help other people. This forces you to step outside yourself and see the world through another person’s eyes. Why is this important? When you help others you have the opportunity to learn new things, and you also have a chance to see just how see how blessed you are for everything in your life, even the not so good things.

By using positive affirmations, you can find the motivation to help others on a regular basis and experience that special feeling of fulfillment. When you are able to genuinely give a helping hand, it will be a very fulfilling experience. If you feel like you are too busy or that no one in your life needs your help, sorry to say it, but you’re clearly mistaken!

Give a Helping Hand and Feel Good About Yourself

We all have busy lives, but if we stopped and helped others a little more often, we would live a much more fulfilling life and build that sense of community that we have long lost.

Think about how many times you have driven by your neighbors house where the trashcans are still laying out after trash day, why not give your neighbor a helping hand? Wouldn’t you like that in return?

Or, consider things closer to home such as helping your spouse iron their clothes for work or helping out with other chores around the house. You have opportunities in your every day life to help people and feel good about yourself and positive affirmations can remind you of this.

Relationship affirmations are simply statements that summarize the type of behavior that you would like to exhibit. A simple affirmation in this circumstance may be, “A helpful friend is an indispensable and fulfilled friend. I am that person!” Sounds simple, right? It is! If you repeat the affirmations several times a day you will make it a reality in your thoughts and actions. Who doesn’t want to be considered indispensable and fulfilled?

Positive affirmations are easy to start using and they will cost you absolutely nothing. Free positive affirmations are widely available, including in the resource box at the end of this article. You can also make your own affirmations, so long as they are positive and in the present tense.

When you believe in affirmations you are giving yourself permission and the power to change your life. Instead of simply standing by and watching those in your life struggle with something, you can cut their burden in half and chip in and help get things done. After all, what good are your skills and talents if you hoard them all to yourself!

Helping doesn’t even mean that you have to go out of your way; it just means that when you have those opportunities that you seize them and make someone’s life easier.

We all pass up opportunities to help other people each day. How many times have you seen someone drop something and you just keep going? Or what about the person who is lost and unsure of directions? These are simple situations where you could help out and if you are missing that fulfillment in your life, you can begin by creating a positive state of mind through affirmations.

Through positive affirmations you can develop better relationships with the people around you and you’ll also feel fulfilled in a way that you may have never been before. Free positive affirmations give you the opportunity to enrich your life in new ways every day.

TODAY’S TIP: Get into the habit of helping those you come in contact with each day. Remember small things can mean a lot.

Have you helped someone today?

“If you’re in a comfort zone, afraid to venture out, Remember that all winners were at one time filled with doubt.” ~ Author Unknown

The more self-confidence you have the easier it is to step out of your comfort zone and the better your chances are for success. Here are some thoughts on that.

Self Confidence – Step Out of Your Comfort Zone and Discover More About You By Don MacNaughton

“When a butterfly has emerged, it can never turn back into a caterpillar” - Colin Wilson

Already in the past I have talked with you about successful people and what sets them out from those who are not so successful. To refresh you on that topic though, what really sets these guys apart from the not-so-successful is their ability to take risks. Women and men that are willing and prepared to step out of their comfort zones in order to bring about the visions they have in their minds. And this takes clarity, courage and mental toughness.

To turn their dreams into reality!

And in the process, these successful people also learn a whole lot more about who they are. I can think of famous business entrepreneurs like Richard Branson or the late Dame Anita Roddick and entertainment giants like Simon Cowell. But also those I admire in my own community people that I grew up with, who have achieved so much.

Taking risks and stepping out of ones comfort zone tends to do that.

Alan Alda, the famous actor who starred in that cult classic television show M*A*S*H and many other films has often come out with really wise quotes. One of my favourite ones from him said, “You have to leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of your intuition. What you will discover will be wonderful. What you will discover is yourself.”

In our comfort zones, nothing is challenged. It’s all mundane. It is all 100% familiar and safe. There is no risk in it. It is completely safe and un-intimidating. In our comfort zone – if we choose to stay there – nothing changes at all. And we do not learn a whole lot about ourselves, because all we seem to experience is more of the same.

Nothing spectacular happens on any level.

Venture out of that comfort zone and the experience changes completely. We will encounter different situations, different people…and we’ll have the opportunity to respond to those different situations and people. In the responding, we learn more about who we are.

But because it is all unfamiliar to us, we need to rely on our intuition to find our way. That gut feeling – our internal guidance system. That is why stepping out of our comfort zones is challenging.

But there is no other way we can experience new things and new people. If we don’t change the scenery either internally or externally, we won’t see anything different. We will not diversify and expand our life experiences – thus our learning and self discovery – any other way.

Embrace your next opportunity to truly step out! Don’t stress out about it – enjoy it!

Step out of your comfort zone in 2010.

“All the concepts about stepping out of your comfort zone mean nothing until you decide that your essential purpose, vision and goals are more important than your self-imposed limitations.” ~ Robert White

This week I want to talk about moving out of our comfort zones. I would guess that 99% of the advances mankind has made were made by people who had the courage to try something new. People who overcame the fear and stepped out of their comfort zone.

It can be scary indeed to step into the unknown, to thread where no one has yet gone. Remember the saying, “to the victor goes the spoils.” In this case it is the one who has the courage to believe in their dream and take action, even when they are scared to the bone, that the dream becomes the spoils.

It is easy to say, “just do it,” to someone else. It is another story to take a look at ourselves and just do it.

Everything starts in the mind. First we have a dream, then the fear takes over. It says, “what if I fail” or that’s a crazy idea, it will never work.

Many times when we tell those we love of our dream we get the same reaction from them, re-enforcing our fear. They think they are being helpful and don’t want to see us get hurt and disappointed.

That is why there is a train of thought that says, keep it to yourself and just go for it. There is another train of thought that says, tell everyone your dream because that gets it out there and it is more likely to come true. Which one is true? The one that works for you.

Just remember, “what ever the mind can see and believe can become reality.” So you see it, do you believe it? That is the question. If so, don’t let anyone talk you out of going for it.

Life is an adventure. It can be fun and exciting. You only have to overcome one obstacle; fear. Some people love to do risky things that bring on that feeling of fear. They jump off cliffs and take daredevil rides. It all in the attitude.

Cultivate an attitude that life is a game and fear and excitement are apart of that game. Learn to embrace it when you are going for your dreams. Once you confront it you will find that it is not as bad as it appeared.

Look back in your life and you will notice that once that fearful experience was over you were still OK.

TODAY’S TIP: Focus your intent on getting the most out of your life and moving past the fear.

What frightens you most?

“Infantile love follows the principle: ‘I love because I am loved.’
Mature love follows the principle: ‘I am loved because I love.’
Immature love says: ‘I love you because I need you.’
Mature love says: ‘I need you because I love you.’” ~ Erich Fromm

There has been more sorrow in our personal lives caused by our misconceptions of love than anything I can think of. Our concepts of love have been distorted by the conditioning of our society and confusion about love from our families.

Many of us use love, or at least we try, to our advantage. This is not love. Our ego may tell us we are in love, but how can we be if we don’t know what it is.

We go into relationships with expectations that they will fulfill us and make our lives work. When this doe not happen we are lost, many cannot find their way back. We carry the bitterness and hurt from one relationship to the next.

The main reason we have so much trouble with our relationships is because we lack self esteem and do not know who we are. In order to live our lives in loving and fulfilling relationships we much know and respect ourselves.

In our world today this is not as easy as it seems. By the time we are adults we have lost our individuality and have little idea of what life is all about.

Many look outside themselves for some form of satisfaction or something to define who they are. Some believe that the more things they have the more important they are. Others believe that there is someone out there, a soul mate or other, who will fulfill them and make them whole.

For this reason it is all important to get in touch with yourself before looking for that perfect relationship. Coming to terms with who you are and learning to be at peace with yourself and by yourself is the only true path to that perfect relationship.

When you know who you are and realize that you don’t need anyone to be happy, it is then that that special person will come into your life. That special person who knows who they are and does not need to lean on someone else to be happy.

Your relationship with others will reflect your relationship with self. The more you love and respect yourself the more you can love and respect others, and the more others will love and respect you.

Things that are meant to be just flow. This is true of relationships and well as other things in our lives. If it feels good it is probably good. If it does not feel good you need to take a look and why. It may be that your relationship with yourself is lacking.

TODAY’S TIP: Do not be afraid to admit that a relationship no longer serves you. You are not a failure because of it.

Can you let go and love?

“Tell me who admires and loves you, And I will tell you who you are.” ~ Charles Augustin Sainte-Beuve

In a perfect world there is only love. Here is an article by someone who thinks love is the basis of everything.

Love – The Basis of Life By Nick Eberle

We all like to love. The whole world exists in love. We come with love and go with love. In between we live with love. Love is the basis of everything.

A well-known South Indian saint once said, “Not only do good things happen out of love, but even so-called bad, harsh, or violent things.” War, for example. Why are there wars? Someone “loved” his own country more. He wanted his country expanded-to rule over other countries. This is misplaced love. Love misplaced or used improperly can bring wars-can cause crimes.

Even in the love between husband and wife. If love is misunderstood that start ” loving” too much-they will end up in the hospital. There should be a limitation to love, and a proper understanding of it. Love should not end in difficulties. If parents lover their children too much, they may not guide them properly. It is the duty of parents to use there experience for this. That is why children are handed over to them, given into there care. The responsibility of parents who really love their children is to show them the way. Children are inexperienced. They are still learning they must not be allowed the freedom to accumulate all kinds of difficulties. “Free: children get stranded; they cannot get out of there confusion. Once they understand things, then you set them free. “We have given you some basic knowledge, now it is your duty, now you can carry on.” Really loving parents guide their children as a duty. It should not be a blind love. It is our duty to love.

Much can be said about the sacred term of love. It should not be considered the lower physical sensual side alone. It has a great purpose. We cannot deny that physical and sensual side, but should not stop there. Love should go up and up-until you learn to to love your neighbor as your own self. Let us make a resolution: I will not bring harm to anybody by using my love in an improper way. Let my love bring good, and good alone to everybody. Let us all march towards that universal love based on Self-realization. Let that be our resolution today.

Om Shanthi, Swami Satchidananda

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Nick_Eberle

TODAY’S TIP: Fill your heart with love. It will make you feel good and effect those around you.

Is your world filled with love?

“If you aren’t good at loving yourself, you will have a difficult time loving anyone, since you’ll resent the time and energy you give another person that you aren’t even giving to yourself.” ~ Barbara De Angelis

All relationships are not meant to last a lifetime. Knowing when it is time to leave and having the courage to do so is a blessing.

Learning To Let Go With Love By Priya Shah

One of the hardest things for any person, man or woman, is letting go of a relationship that’s not meant to be. We are often attached to the illusion that this person is “the One” for us, and that if we don’t have him or her, we’ll never find somebody new.

Holding on to disappointment, hurt, blame, anger, resentment, and bitterness, we convince ourselves that “all men are jerks” or “all women are bitches.”

If you’ve just got out of a relationship and are harbouring a lot of resentment against your partner or against the opposite sex, now is NOT the time to start dating again. Your anger and bitterness will poison even the most loving relationship.

When we hang on to baggage from past relationships, we end up projecting our pain on to others in our lives – our families, children and, eventually, our new partners.

Our emotional baggage is usually rooted in our relationships with our own parents, or in bad relationships we’ve had in the past. We have to lighten our load and heal our pain before we can love again.

Some of the practices you need to cultivate in order to heal yourself are:

• Radical Personal Responsibility: Take responsibility for the role you played in your relationship, either by taking inappropriate action, not acting altogether or expecting too much. Stop blaming your partner. Own your feelings, so you can change them.

• Self-Awareness: Are there patterns that keep repeating in your relationships? Do you have a tendency to get into relationships with abusive people, or become abusive yourself? Become mindful of your reactions to people and situations. Learn to identify your patterns, and the unhealthy beliefs that are causing them.

• Acceptance: Accept yourself and your partner the way you are. Accept the fact that the relationship was not meant to be, that it didn’t work because it was not your highest and best.

• Forgiveness: Learn to forgive yourself for all the damage that your anger and pain may have caused, and forgive others for being human and acting out their own anger and pain.

• Gratitude: Be grateful that you’re out of a bad relationship, so you can be with someone better suited to your needs. Be grateful for all the lessons you’ve learned from your partner.

• Compassion: Learn to look at all people as human beings dealing with their own pain. Spend some time seeing the world through their eyes and you’ll become less judgmental.

• Detachment: Learn to let go of unhealthy attachments to people, things and situations.

• Independence: Stop expecting other people to give you the love and acceptance you should be giving yourself. Learn to meet your own needs, let go of expectations, and enter a healthy, inter-dependent relationship.

• Optimism: Optimism is not essential, but it makes life so much easier. An optimistic outlook, positive attitude and belief that everything happens for the best, can help you bounce back from your loss. Have faith that the best is yet to come.

It takes a lot of tears, hard work, and introspection to break the chains of the past. But it’s worth every moment! The feeling of freedom and contentment that you experience is just awesome.

Getting rid of your anger and hurt will help you stop blaming others for your pain, and allowed you to see your former partner as they really are – a wonderful, sensitive human being with the capacity to love, to care, and to hurt just as deeply as you.

It will allow you to love life again, to see the beauty in every experience, to be non-judgmental and open to new relationships.

No time spent in a relationship is ever wasted. Ever experience is a lesson and only when you learn the lesson will you progress to the next level. So stop beating yourself up over all the years you “wasted” with that “loser.”

If it didn’t work, it was probably not meant to be. You can’t force someone to love you, just as you can’t force commitment or marriage. These are stages that should happen naturally, when it feels right for both people.

Contrary to popular opinion (and sad love songs) love is not meant to hurt. If you’re in pain, what you’re experiencing is not love, but attachment or codependence. Too often we fall in love, not with our partner, but with the IDEA of being in love.

It’s best to let go of a relationship that’s causing too much pain. Instead of wallowing in the past and writing your own sad love song, do your inner work, get rid of the anger and disappointment and get on with your life.

Let go of your partner with love, so you can move past your hurt and learn to love again.

“If you have love in your life it can make up for a great many things you lack. If you don’t have it, no matter what else there is, it’s not enough.” ~ Ann Landers

One of the reasons that we are so confused about love is that we do not love ourselves. You can only love someone else as much as you love yourself.

Self Improvement – Do You Love Yourself? By Sarah Dillon

As the saying goes, to love and be loved is one of life’s greatest treasures. It feels so good to be able to cherish someone and do selfless acts for them. But how can a person love another when they do not know how to love themselves? It is just as important to love one’s self as it is to love another.

Loving yourself is not egotistical, nor is it selfish. It is necessary. Loving yourself can have many meanings. It can mean that you know yourself, your goals and aspirations and that you work toward them. It can mean that you learn to say “no” when you simply cannot field another person’s request for time or resources.

It can mean that you take time out of your day to focus on yourself, relax, and think. What sense does it make to love others and put them ahead of you if you burn yourself out while doing it? Also, how can you expect to really help others if you have spent so much time on others that you have not kept things in order in your own life?

Before you can seriously love someone else by affecting them positively, you have to do what it takes to put yourself in a position to emotionally, financially, and spiritually help others.

Another way to look at loving yourself is in the area of relationships. If a person loves him or herself, they will make sure that they dress presentably, speak confidently, and bring goals to the table.

This person is confident because they are comfortable with his- or herself as they are. They love their life with all of its mistakes and faults, and they are happy. How can another person accept you, your mistakes and faults if you yourself do not? If you value yourself with love then others will be able to as well.

Loving yourself is an essential part of being successful in life. People who love themselves do what is necessary to be happy and fulfill all of their responsibilities so that they can effectively help others. They are confident in themselves and by themselves, because they define their own wealth instead of depending on someone else to.

They keep their bodies healthy and in shape, and ensure their own safety. They have a strong sense of spirituality that helps them to love themselves. All of these descriptions depict the ideal, self-loving person. This person has their own life in order, so he or she can effectively affect another’s. Loving yourself is just one step on the road to success and the road to service.

TODAY’S TIP: First thing in the morning and last thing at night look into the mirror and tell yourself that you love you. Be sure you mean it.

Do you love you more today?

“True forgiveness is not an action after the fact, it is an attitude with which you enter each moment.” ~ David Ridge

Now that we have spent a week talking about forgiveness I hope you realize how important it is to live with a heart filled with forgiveness.

There may be people you have encountered in your life journey that you thought you could never forgive for the wrong they have done to you or the hurt they have caused. To not forgive them does not hurt them, it hurts you.

To hold anger and resentment in your heart feeds on your life force. We were meant to enjoy life, to learn and grow. Holding on to the anger keeps us locked in a place where growth is not possible.

I am sure you, as I, have seen people who profess to be Christian, yet have hardened hearts that cry out for revenge. That is certainly not a Christian value. Yet they are encouraged and supported by others.

I hope that you will have the courage to live with forgiveness in your heart. Forgiveness and love go hand in hand. Forgiveness and love feeds your life force and thereby makes for a healthier, happier, and more fulfilling life.

Commit to forgiving all who have done wrong to you. List all who have hurt you in any way. Take the names on your list one at a time and forgive them. Form a picture of them in your mind and tell them you forgive them, you love them and bless them. Do this with conviction and feeling.

Then with each name, after you have forgiven them be sure to forgive yourself for any contribution you make to that situation. Remember the common denominator in all your experiences is you. You contribute to every thing that happens to you so take responsibility for your part.

Radiate love to the people you have forgiven and then feel the love encompass you. Feel the weight being lifted from your shoulders. Love is much lighter than anger and hate. Love is much easier to carry through life.

Once you have truly forgiven those in your life you will experience a change that will fill you with love and appreciation for what life has to offer. You will feel energized and refreshed. Accomplishing forgiveness will truly liberate you.

Have you heard of Ho’oponopono? It is a healing system from Hawaii. You repeat this phrase, “I am sorry, Please forgive me, I love you, God bless you, Thank you.” Repeat this phrase for a minute or so and see how it feels. It is very healing if you can get into it. Of course there is more to it, research it.

TODAY’S TIP: Practice forgiveness and you will brighten your life and those around you.

Do you need forgiveness?

“He who is devoid of the power to forgive, is devoid of the power to love.” ~ Martin Luther King, Jr

Access the Healing Power of Forgiveness by Eve Delunas

I will always remember the moment I first began to forgive my father. It was early one bright Sunday morning in June and I was driving to San Jose to teach an all day make-up class in Family Therapy to a group of graduate counseling students. The day before, I had hastily rented a book on tape about “letting go” to keep me company during my four-hour round-trip commute. To my surprise, the entire book was the author’s poignant story of how she had chosen to forgive her father, who sounded like a carbon copy of my own dad.

As I listened to the writer describe her courageous journey toward acceptance and healing, I became acutely aware of the bitterness and pain in my heart that I had kept locked away for decades. I felt my tears begin to wash away the anger, hurt, and resentment I had carried for so long. I suddenly saw my relationship with my father in a new way-through the eyes of my Greater Self. Looking at the big picture of my life, I recognized how my dad had been my most important teacher in this lifetime: coping with his negative behavior towards me both strengthened my sense of self and deepened my level of compassion for those who are suffering. I also found my heart softening to the wounded little boy my alcoholic father hid so well from the world. Lifted by a profound sense of lightness and grace, I could feel the power of forgiveness working its magic in my very being. It wasn’t until I arrived at the university that I realized it was Father’s Day.

Forgiveness is our most potent medicine for self-healing. The light of forgiveness transforms everything it touches. When we forgive, we open the door to miracles in our lives. To forgive is to let go-to completely release any negative thoughts or feelings you have been holding toward your self or another. You say goodbye to hate, resentment, anger, hurt, guilt, and shame. You stop living in the land of “if only” and start accepting “what is” so you can move forward on your life’s path. Forgiveness is a powerful choice you make to be whole again.

It is not only in my own life that I have witnessed the power of forgiveness. In my psychotherapy practice, I have delighted in watching the blessings multiply after my clients make the courageous choice to let go.

Unfortunately, many people do not avail themselves of the healing power of forgiveness because of misconceptions they hold. Some common myths about forgiveness are:

1. The other person has to do something before I can forgive him or her.
If you are waiting for another to recognize he or she has wronged you, you have placed the power to heal yourself in someone else’s hands. Take back the power to set yourself free of the past by choosing to forgive regardless of whether or not the other ever “sees the light.”

2. If I forgive, I am saying what the other person did was okay.
Forgiveness does not send the message that the other’s bad behavior was okay. Rather, it is saying that you are not going to continue to dwell on the past and carry the heavy feelings associated with it. When we lighten our emotional load, we refuse to allow the past to torment us in the present.

3. I must hold positive feelings for the person I am forgiving.
While forgiveness may help to transmute our pain and anger into compassion for the other, it is not necessary to replace the negative feelings you have had towards the other with positive ones. Of primary importance is your willingness to release the negative energy you have been holding towards a person or situation.

4. Forgiveness is something I do for the other.
Forgiveness is a gift you give to yourself. It takes a lot of your energy to continue to hold on to negative feelings toward another. Forgiveness releases this energy so you can apply it to more constructive and joyful pursuits.

5. If I forgive, I may get hurt again.
You can let go of the past while holding on to what an experience has taught you. To forgive is to retain the wisdom while releasing the pain associated with the life lesson.

6. I only need to forgive someone once.
Forgiveness is a process, so you may need to let go more than once. Should the negative feelings reappear, be gentle with yourself, and choose to release them one more time.

7. I need to understand why before I can forgive.
Needing to understand why is a trap that can snare you. Life is full of mysteries. You may never understand the whys which underlie another’s behavior. Don’t let that prevent you from releasing the past and moving on with your life.

Your inner guidance is forever urging you to choose the path of healing and joy. When you activate the power of forgiveness, you release any negative hold that the past has had on you. Give yourself the gift of forgiveness, and watch your life transform as it becomes a more perfect reflection of the light that you are.
