Do you know the meaning of persistence?
“Failure is only postponed success as long as courage ‘coaches’ ambition. The habit of persistence is the habit of victory.” ~ Herbert Kaufman
Some people have a distorted view of what persistence means. Here is some clarification.
The Real Meaning of Persistence By Andrew Peel
When I first became a network marketer I was told one of the keys to success was ‘persistence’. In fact in one of my favorite books, Og Mandino’s The Greatest Salesman in The World he emphasizes the virtue of persistence. The reason being it is not given to us to know at what point we might succeed just that we will if we persist. Bob Proctor of the film The Secret fame says the same thing as do pretty much all the great writers on success.
I had interpreted this to mean devise a plan keep at it and eventually I would see success. I have read a lot of material on the actual topic of social media marketing to ensure I was doing things ‘the right way’.
I am getting consistent results but no improvement and this lead me to question this idea of ‘persist’ and you will eventually succeed. Then I came across two ‘light bulb’ moments that I thought it would be useful to share with new entrepreneurs like myself.
Persistence does not mean doing the same thing over and over again in the hope you will eventually succeed, I gleaned this insight from a quote by Einstein, ‘if you always do what you have done you will always get the same results’. The second was from Bob Proctor when talking about the Universal Law of Relativity. If I when I am starting out and I compare my results to a person who is a top earner and I get down hearted that is a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Everyone has to learn a trade and what I should be looking for is improvement. If after looking at my results I am not happy with them I should seek out the advice of successful people or at least study their methods through reading and then follow those steps.
So persistence I have come to realize is a much more rounded concept than, ‘just keeping at it’, that actually sets up more resistance and you end up in a rut. Persistence is about committing to an endeavor, setting goals, measuring the results comparing where you are with where you want to be and then asking the simple question, ‘If I wasn’t doing it this way what other way could I do it to get better results?’. This is why Master Mind Groups are so powerful because you can learn from successful people and researching the methods employed by really successful people in your organization can often help break down the wall of resistance.

TODAY’S TIP: Remember that persistence does not mean doing the same thing over and over. Persistence means staying on track and making adjustments as needed.
