Is goal setting important?
“In absence of clearly defined goals, we become strangely loyal to performing daily acts of trivia.” ~ Author Unknown
We end the week with an article on why goal setting is so important in our lives.
What Is The Importance of Goal Setting By Suzanne M Camille
The following are the top three reasons why goal setting is important in your life.
1. To begin with, imagine that you lived your life without purpose. How would your life be? Your life would be empty and without purpose. You would be like an item of clothing hanging out to dry on a clothing line; you can be blown in any direction. However, having clear and concise goals serves as a compass for where you are headed.
2. The second reason goal setting is important is that it helps you remain focused in achieving what you want in life. Many people know what they want to achieve in life but simply do nothing to propel them in that direction. Having a clear goal in mind reminds you what you want to achieve in life. It informs your actions and points you in the right direction. Goal setting is one of the reasons people become successful.
3. The reason why goal setting is important is that it helps you overcome procrastination. By putting down on paper what you want to achieve, you become more committed. Part of getting committed is drilling the idea into your subconscious.
A word of Caution
Many people make a number of mistakes when setting goals. The most common mistake is setting goals that are too ambitious such that they become a discouragement. The best way to set goals is to adhere to the S.M.A.R.T technique. SMART is simply an acronym for “Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time specific”. Examining these five in closer detail:
1. Specific – your goals must be stated clearly and concisely
2. Measurable – you must have a way to measure your progress otherwise you will not be able to take corrective action if things go wrong
3. Attainable – your goals must be realistic. This is not to mean that you set mediocre goals; the idea is to set objectives that challenge you and force you to stretch yourself but not too ambitious as to be a discouragement
4. Relevant – your objectives must be relevant to your professional and personal development
5. Time specific – your targets must have a time period attached to them. Having open-ended goals serves no purpose. You must have deadlines.
The bottom line is that if you want to reach any level of success in your life, it is important that you set goals and make plans.
