Building Self Esteem by Creating a Positive Self Image By Martin Godden

Self esteem is the way a person thinks and feels about him or herself.

Many professionals believe self esteem is developed during childhood, and is largely affected by how this person has been treated by those surrounding them during this period of time. But, you can always work towards building yourself up from where you are now. There are many individuals who suffer from low esteem. It becomes something which affects all facets of their life. It can have adverse effects on confidence, ability to build and maintain, as well as career development or work performance. There is also the possibility it could lead to unhappiness and a generally unsatisfactory life. There are many ways for them to build self-esteem however.

One of the most effective ways to do this is through creating a positive self image.

That simply means fostering a favorable view of one’s self, which includes their talents and abilities, as well as their physical attributes. In other words, you begin to appreciate and love yourself. If you do not like yourself, you are in need of building your self esteem. An important aspect of building self esteem is to get rid of negative thoughts and self-talk. How exactly is this done? The most important thing is to recognize a negative thought as it enters your mind. One cannot simply rid themselves of all negative thought. They can, however, replace these negative thoughts with positive ones.

Say for example you’re beginning to have doubts about your self-worth; replace the doubtful thoughts with thoughts of belief and confidence in yourself. It’s very important that you change any negative thought immediately, so as to not let it linger in your mind. Dwelling on negative thoughts could possibility result in a habit which can be very difficult to change. Positive affirmations are yet another method of dealing with negative thoughts, thus building self esteem. It works like this: use words, beliefs and ideas which are meant to be read or recited on a regular basis. Take this popular positive affirmation as an example: “In every day, in every way I am getting better and better.”

If you are having negative thoughts and are suffering from low self-esteem, establish a habit of repeating this affirmation at regular intervals throughout the day. Finally, another way to build self esteem is by surrounding yourself with positive and supportive friends and relatives. This is probably the easiest, as well as the most effective way of building self esteem. Words of encouragement and caring from these individuals can do wonders to you. Their love and understanding is definitely more powerful than any affirmation or positive thought. Sometimes just knowing there is somebody out there who believes in you makes you believe in yourself as well. By starting slow and following these guidelines, you’ll see changes in the way you perceive yourself, building self esteem bit by bit.
